Roasted fennel and orange salad

June 19, 20221 Comment

New places After moving to a different country, city, place, whichever of those it is, there are always a lot of firsts. It takes a bit of time before memories have been created that make a new place feel like home. Over the past few months, there have been plenty of "first-time" experiences for me. … Continue reading Roasted fennel and orange salad

Moving, once again The past months have certainly not been boring for me. After four years in Berlin, I felt like it was time to move on. So a period of reading lots of job adds, replying to some, and doing video-interviews followed. Thankfully it did not take too long before an opportunity came along: … Continue reading Roast of sweet potato, chickpeas and chicken

Windowsill gardening Berlin is the city of techno parties, döners, hipsters, vegans, start-ups... However, in those two years that I have been living here, there has been something else I always noticed as well: the "Kleingartens". Those are basically pieces of land that are subdivided into small gardens people can rent. Of course, this is … Continue reading Vegetarian Quiche

Spargelzeit (Asparagus time) Finally, it is spring again! Although all seasons have their advantages, spring might be my favourite because of many small reasons: The first days of going outside without a coat, enjoying the first warm rays of sunshine. The birds singing in the tree in front of my house when I wake up. … Continue reading Asparagus tortellini in ginger broth

Park life I definitely like summer. Not just because I enjoy being outside and feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin. But also because of the effect it has on people and places. In the depths of winter, when it is freezing cold, Berlin can look quite dark and gloomy. Although this undoubtedly … Continue reading Gnocchi with peperonata sauce

Of stereotypes and flowers When I am traveling and I tell people I am from Holland, I usually get the same response. It tends to be something in the line of: "Oh, so you´re from Amsterdam. Do you smoke a lot of marihuana?" I have to admit it is an understandable reaction in a way, … Continue reading Seabream with spring vegetables and ginger

Evening light after a warm spring day in the very dry south of Spain. Though one similarity with Vienna this time of year: beautiful blossoms.
The meteorological spring started yesterday on this side of the world! Time to start dreaming of warmth and summer trips...
Last weekend it was time for a calçotada. A Catalan tradition that not that known in other places. Usual comment: "What are those burned things?"
Today is usually one of the biggest days for flower sellers. But although bouquets are nice, I much prefer sitting in between flowering plants outside, like bougainvillea and strelitzia (bird of paradise flowers).
I don't know about you, but I sometimes need some sweet treats during this cold winter weather.
Winter Wonderland at its finest! Semmering is just an hour drive from Vienna, but a different world all together.
